This 1987 Suzuki Samurai is finished in blue with a white replacement soft top and is offered from Jeffreys Bay by , its third owner and the keeper of the vehicle for thirteen years. It runs the 1.3 litre four through the five speed manual and the part time transfer case, and shows 174,200km.

It is a coastal vehicle and the listing treats that as the central question rather than a footnote. The rear cross member was cut out and replaced by the previous owner in 2016, that invoice is published, and the welds are photographed. The chassis rails were wire brushed, treated and coated in 2019 with new body mount bushes. Leaf spring shackles, bushes, dampers and U bolts were replaced in 2023, and the cam belt, water pump and a carburettor clean and set were done in July.

The flaws the seller states are play in both front king pin bearings that has not been addressed, a steering box adjusted twice that still has play at the wheel, a second gear synchro that baulks on a fast change, and a replacement soft top with a crazed rear window and stiff zips.

One question went unanswered, and the reason is one the site has not seen before. Asked about the model's documented rollover reputation and whether this vehicle has ever been on its side, the seller declined, objecting to the question as framed rather than to the subject. His answer is in the transcript in full. Kept does not edit a decline or argue with it on the page, and the comment thread has taken up the argument instead. Bidders should read both.

Model background

The SJ series is the small hard 4x4 that Suzuki sold everywhere and that everywhere then used until it fell apart. Leaf springs at both ends, a live axle at each end, part time four wheel drive with a low range, a 1.3 litre four making numbers nobody quotes, and a kerb weight under a tonne. The lightness is the whole engineering argument: it goes where heavier vehicles dig in, and it can be recovered by four people and a rope.

Its American reputation is a separate matter. In 1988 Consumer Reports declared the Samurai unacceptable after a rollover test, Suzuki sued, and the case ran for eight years before settling. The engineering point underneath the noise is not disputed by anybody: a short wheelbase and a high centre of gravity behave the way physics says they will, and the vehicle rewards a driver who understands that.

In South Africa it went to farms, dive schools, game lodges and the coast, and it was used until it stopped. Survivors here are almost always rust repairs waiting to be found, because the chassis rails, the body mounts and the rear cross member are where the salt gets in first. A Samurai with published photographs of its welds is a more useful listing than one photographed only in the sun.

Seller interview

Before the car went live, the seller answered a standard set of questions plus a set our tools generated for this model from its documented failure modes. The full transcript is public, including anything they declined.

Kept score
8.0/10

9 of 10 answered, 1 declined. A high score means the seller told you more, not that the car is better.

6.6/10medium confidence

Inferred from the seller's answers and this model's known failure points. Nobody from Kept has inspected this car.

1 question the seller declined

  • This model carries a documented rollover reputation from the 1988 Consumer Reports test. Has this vehicle ever been rolled or been on its side, and what would you say to a buyer about the model's stability?

Generated from the model's documented safety record. The question covers both this vehicle's history and the seller's account of the design.

Known flaws

The seller's own list of what this car needs money spent on.

  • 01Asked about the model's rollover reputation and any history of one, the seller declined, objecting to the question as framed
  • 02Chassis rails were treated in 2019 and the rear cross member was replaced in 2016 by a previous owner, welds photographed
  • 03Soft top is a replacement, the rear window is crazed and the zips are stiff
  • 04Second gear synchro baulks on a fast change, unchanged in thirteen years
  • 05Both front king pin bearings have play, on the flaws list rather than the service record because they have not been done
  • 06Steering box has been adjusted twice and there is still play at the wheel

Note from the seller

The seller's own words, published as written. The only copy on this page they control.

I have had this since 2012 and it has lived ten minutes from the beach in Jeffreys Bay for all of it. That is a disclosure and not a selling point. Everything I know about the rust on it is in the flaws list and the photographs, including the cross member the man before me replaced.

What I would want to know as a buyer: both front king pins have play and I have not done them, the steering box has been adjusted twice and there is still play, second gear baulks on a fast change and the soft top is a replacement with a crazed rear window. The belt and the water pump are two months old.

On the rollover question I said no, and I stand by that. Ask me whether this vehicle has been damaged and I will answer, and the answer is that it has not been. Ask me to account for a 1988 American magazine test and I am not doing it, because it is not a fact about my vehicle. That was my position at intake and it goes up as a decline, which I accept.

First seller on this site to decline a question because he thinks the question is stupid, then answer the useful part of it in the comments anyway. I have no idea whether that is honesty or stubbornness and at this money it does not matter much.

King pins with play and a steering box that has been adjusted twice are both on the flaws list rather than dressed up as character. That combination is what wanders at 100km/h and it is cheap to fix properly.

For what it is worth the physics is not controversial. Short wheelbase, high centre of gravity, skinny tyres. Drive it like the 1980s farm vehicle it is and it is fine. That is not a defect to be disclosed, it is the design.

Then let me put it plainly here as well: this vehicle has never been on its side in my thirteen years and there is nothing in the file or the panel work to suggest it before that. What I declined was being asked to account for the model's reputation, not the question of damage.

overberg_pajero

I understand why he declined the rollover question and I still think he answered the wrong half of it. Nobody is asking him to defend Consumer Reports. The useful part of that question is whether this specific vehicle has ever been over, and he does answer that in his note.

Publishing the weld photographs and the previous owner's cross member invoice is the correct way to sell a coastal SJ. Every other one is photographed from three quarters in bright sun with the words no rust in the advert.
