1989 Honda CRX Si, 1.6
Sold new here through a Mercedes-Benz dealer, with every invoice since
Overview
Compiled by Kept from the seller's intake answers, the documents supplied and published records for the model. The seller does not write or edit this section, and nobody from Kept has inspected the car.
This 1989 Honda CRX Si is finished in yellow over black cloth and is offered from Pinetown by , its second owner, who bought it from the original owner in 2004 and has kept it for twenty one years. It shows 164,700km and drives through the five speed manual.
It was supplied new through the Mercedes-Benz dealer network in Durban in February 1989, which is not a mistake in the paperwork. Honda vehicles were assembled and distributed in South Africa under an arrangement with Mercedes-Benz South Africa in that period, and the supplying dealer stamp in the service book is a Mercedes one. That stamp, and the eleven that follow it, are the start of the most complete file on this site.
Every invoice from 2004 to 2025 is present, in date order, photographed in full. Cam belts at 138,400km in 2016 and again at 164,700km in May this year, both with tensioner and water pump. A clutch and pressure plate in 2022 with the rear main seal checked and reported dry. A full suspension refresh in 2011. The rear arch lips were wire brushed and treated in 2019 and were not cut out, which the seller states plainly rather than describing as rust free.
Every question put at intake was answered. Nothing was declined. The flaws stated are the treated arch corrosion, a perished sunroof seal that whistles above 100km/h, thin original paint on the roof and bonnet, a collapsed driver's seat bolster and a replaced radio, with the factory head unit included in a box. This is the least expensive lot on the site this week and it carries the most paper.
Model background
The second generation CRX arrived in 1987 as a two seat coupe built on Civic underpinnings, with double wishbone suspension at all four corners on a car weighing under 900kg. It was quick because it was light and it handled because Honda spent money where nobody in the class was spending it. The Si carried the 1.6 with the twin carburettor or fuel injection depending on market, and it became the enthusiast's answer to cars costing twice as much.
Its South African history is a footnote worth knowing. Honda had no distribution of its own here in the 1980s, so the cars were handled through Mercedes-Benz South Africa, which is why a 1989 CRX service book carries a Mercedes dealer stamp and why so few people believe it when they see it. The arrangement ran until Honda established itself locally in the 1990s.
Survivors are thin on the ground. These were cheap, light and fast, which is a combination that does not usually produce careful ownership, and most were modified, crashed or rusted. A twenty one year single owner car with a stamped book from the supplying dealer and an unbroken invoice run is a genuinely rare document set on a car this affordable.

Seller interview
Before the car went live, the seller answered a standard set of questions plus a set our tools generated for this model from its documented failure modes. The full transcript is public, including anything they declined.
10 of 10 answered. A high score means the seller told you more, not that the car is better.
Inferred from the seller's answers and this model's known failure points. Nobody from Kept has inspected this car.

Note from the seller
The seller's own words, published as written. The only copy on this page they control.
I bought this from the man who bought it new, in 2004, with 89,600km on it. He gave me a handwritten page about the first fifteen years along with the book and every slip he had kept, and that page is in the documents. I have kept every invoice since in the same folder.
What I would want to know: the rear arch lips have surface rust that I treated in 2019 rather than cut out, the sunroof seal is perished and whistles on the freeway, the paint on the roof and bonnet is original and it is thin, and the driver's seat bolster has gone soft. The belt was done in May.
I answered everything they asked me because there was nothing I could not answer. Twenty one years of a car and a folder is the whole reason I am able to. I would not have been able to do this in 2004.
Comments & offers
6 comments · 3 offersI have spent three weeks in these threads looking for the hole and this one does not have one. Twenty one years, every slip, nothing declined, and he tells you the arches were treated and not cut before anyone asks. Bid it up.
This is what the site should look like at the bottom of the market. Nothing here is expensive and everything here is proved.
Three people so far and I have a lift booked in Pinetown for anyone else who wants it up before Thursday. The underbody photographs in the gallery were taken in May and nothing has changed since.
Treated and not cut is the correct disclosure on the arches, and on a KwaZulu-Natal coastal car it is the first thing I would want under a torch. Has anyone been under it at a viewing?
Every invoice since 2004 in date order, photographed in full. On a car at this money. There are seven figure listings elsewhere on this site with less paper behind them.
A Mercedes-Benz dealer stamp in a Honda service book is the sort of thing that gets a listing accused of being fake by people who were not here in the 1980s. Good that it is explained rather than glossed over.
