This 1997 Porsche 911 Turbo S is finished in Guards Red over black leather with carbon fibre interior trim, and is offered from Constantia, Cape Town by , its third owner and the keeper of the car for fourteen years. It shows 61,800km. The Turbo S was assembled by Porsche Exclusive on top of the 993 Turbo, and 345 were built worldwide across 1997 and 1998.

The car is left-hand drive and was imported from Germany in 2011 at 29,400km, with the German service book stamped seven times to that point. The import file, the SARS release and the police clearance are published with the lot, as is the Porsche certificate of authenticity confirming the Turbo S build and its original specification. Buyers should read the papers as an import history rather than an SA delivery, because that is what it is.

Under this owner the file runs continuously. Dampers, bushes and a geometry set in 2013, valve cover and chain housing gaskets with plugs and coil packs in 2018, both K16 turbochargers rebuilt with new boost pipes and couplings in 2021, and a clutch, dual mass flywheel and rear main seal in 2023 while the gearbox was out. A leak-down test was run on all six cylinders ahead of the sale and the figures are in the document set.

The flaws the seller states are a secondary air injection fault that returns on a cold start in cold weather and has been cleared rather than cured, stone chip damage to the fins of the front left oil cooler, a lacquer crack in the carbon dash trim above the glovebox, and a creased driver's bolster. One question went unanswered: asked whether the engine had ever been remapped before he bought it, the seller declined, saying he has no way of knowing what the first two owners did. Bidders should price that accordingly.

Model background

The 993 was the last air-cooled 911, and the Turbo was the first 911 Turbo with four-wheel drive and the first with two turbochargers. The twin K16 arrangement made the 3.6 flat six answer immediately where the single turbo cars had made owners wait, which is the reason the 993 Turbo is the one usually described as the first genuinely usable 911 Turbo.

The Turbo S sat above it. Porsche Exclusive raised the engine to 331kW with larger turbochargers, revised intercoolers and reworked engine electronics, added the extra air scoops in the rear quarters and the four pipe exhaust, fitted cross drilled brakes behind yellow calipers, and trimmed the cabin in carbon fibre. Production ran to 345 cars, and it was the final air-cooled Turbo Porsche built.

Almost none came to South Africa new. The cars that are here arrived as private imports, which makes the paperwork and the specification check the whole argument for any given example. A certificate of authenticity and a continuous file matter more on this model than on almost anything else of its era.

Seller interview

Before the car went live, the seller answered a standard set of questions plus a set our tools generated for this model from its documented failure modes. The full transcript is public, including anything they declined.

Kept score
7.8/10

9 of 10 answered, 1 declined. A high score means the seller told you more, not that the car is better.

8.2/10medium confidence

Inferred from the seller's answers and this model's known failure points. Nobody from Kept has inspected this car.

1 question the seller declined

  • 993 Turbos are frequently remapped, often without a record. Has the ECU ever been remapped, in your ownership or before it?

Aftermarket mapping on this engine is common and shortens turbo and head gasket life.

Known flaws

The seller's own list of what this car needs money spent on.

  • 01Secondary air injection fault logged on cold start in cold weather, cleared but recurring, seller has not replaced the pump
  • 02Stone chip damage to the fins of the front left oil cooler, no leak reported
  • 03Lacquer crack in the carbon fibre dash trim above the glovebox
  • 04Driver's seat bolster creased and starting to polish
  • 05Left-hand drive, imported to South Africa in 2011, so the papers are an import file rather than an original SA delivery

Note from the seller

The seller's own words, published as written. The only copy on this page they control.

I bought this car in 2011 from the estate of the second owner in Stuttgart and shipped it myself. It has done 32,000km with me and every one of them is invoiced. I am selling because I have bought a house I cannot pay for twice.

What I would want to know as the buyer: the secondary air fault comes back on a cold morning and I have chosen to live with it rather than throw a pump at it, the front left oil cooler has been peppered by the N2, and the dash trim has a crack in the lacquer. The turbos were rebuilt in 2021 and the clutch and rear main seal in 2023, both with invoices.

I did not answer the remap question because I do not know. There is nothing in the German file about it, the car reads standard boost on a gauge, and I am not going to write down something I cannot prove. Bring your own tuner and put it on a dyno before you bid if it matters to you, and it should.

Seller does not know if it has been remapped, has not scoped the secondary air, and the first 29,000km are somebody else's paperwork in another language. At seven and a half million I would want all three answered before the hammer, not after.

Worth saying for anyone new to these: the certificate of authenticity is the whole thing here. There are Turbos wearing Turbo S scoops and yellow calipers, and they are not the same car or the same money.

Only cleared. The specialist's view was that the pump is the likely source and that it is not worth chasing until it fails properly, and I took that advice. I have not had the ports scoped and I am not going to claim I have.

durban_deutsch

Secondary air on a 1996 onward car is usually the pump or a blocked port in the head, and the port route means the heads come off. Has anyone actually scoped it, or has it only been cleared?

constantia_993Seller

They are in the document gallery under 'leak-down, March 2025'. Cylinder by cylinder: 4, 5, 4, 6, 5, 4 percent, cold engine, tested by the specialist who rebuilt the turbos.

Can the seller post the leak-down figures cylinder by cylinder rather than a pass or fail? Valve guides are the thing on a high hour 993 and the numbers say more than the summary.

345 built and this is the first one I have seen come up publicly in this country. Whatever it makes will be the number the rest of us quote for the next five years.
