This 1999 Toyota Land Cruiser 100-Series VX is finished in white over beige leather and is offered from White River, Mpumalanga by , its second owner and the keeper of the vehicle for fifteen years. It carries the 4.7 litre 2UZ-FE V8 through the four speed automatic and full time four wheel drive, and shows 214,600km.

The file is continuous from 2014 and unusually specific about the two jobs that decide what a 2UZ is worth. The timing belt, water pump, tensioner and idlers were done at 162,900km in 2018 and again at 214,600km in May this year ahead of the sale, both invoiced. The starter motor, which sits under the intake manifold and is a labour job rather than a part job, was replaced in 2021 with the plugs and coils done while the manifold was off. Front lower ball joints, a documented failure point on this chassis, were replaced on both sides in 2023 with CV boots, wheel bearings and a geometry set.

The vehicle has spent its life towing and crossing borders rather than sitting. The carnet and border paperwork for trips into Botswana, Namibia and Mozambique between 2012 and 2023 is published with the lot, and the underbody was treated in 2023 after those years of gravel. Surface corrosion on the rear cross member and both rear arch lips was wire brushed and coated at that point rather than cut out, and the seller says so.

The flaws the seller states are a rear air conditioning circuit that blows warm and has not been diagnosed, a light torque converter shudder between 60 and 80km/h, a split driver's armrest, front seats recovered rather than original, and the corrosion described above. One question went unanswered: asked what the Active Height Control globes read on a pressure test, the seller declined, saying the test was quoted at R4,000 and he chose not to spend it before selling. The globes are believed original at 214,600km. Bidders should price that accordingly.

Model background

The 100-Series replaced the 80 in 1998 and split the model line in two. The 105 kept the solid front axle and the straight six for the markets that still wanted them, and the 100 took independent front suspension and, in UZJ100 form, the 4.7 litre 2UZ-FE V8. Purists called it the moment the Land Cruiser went soft. Everyone who then drove one to Kaokoland and back stopped saying that.

The 2UZ is the reason these are still worth buying. It is a cast iron block, an aluminium head, a timing belt on a 150,000km interval and very little else to go wrong, and it will run past 500,000km on a file like this one. What it will not do is use less than 18 litres per hundred, which is the whole reason a 100-Series V8 has always been cheap to buy in South Africa and never cheap to own.

In this market the 100 became the long distance family and expedition vehicle that people actually kept: Botswana in June, the Kruger gate in December, a trailer behind it every time. The ones worth having are the ones with the belt history and the ball joints done, because both are known, both are dated, and neither is visible from the driver's seat.

Seller interview

Before the car went live, the seller answered a standard set of questions plus a set our tools generated for this model from its documented failure modes. The full transcript is public, including anything they declined.

Kept score
8.1/10

9 of 10 answered, 1 declined. A high score means the seller told you more, not that the car is better.

7.5/10medium confidence

Inferred from the seller's answers and this model's known failure points. Nobody from Kept has inspected this car.

1 question the seller declined

  • The VX runs Active Height Control. What do the globes read on a pressure test, and have they or the pump ever been replaced?

Documented AHC accumulator wear. Globes are a wear item with a known service life and a high replacement cost.

Known flaws

The seller's own list of what this car needs money spent on.

  • 01Active Height Control has never been pressure tested in this ownership and the globes are believed original, so budget for the test and possibly the globes
  • 02Rear air conditioning blows warm, front system works, the rear lines have not been diagnosed
  • 03Surface corrosion on the rear cross member and on both rear arch lips, treated in 2023, not cut out
  • 04Torque converter shudders lightly between 60 and 80km/h on a light throttle
  • 05Driver's door armrest leather split, and the leather on the front seats has been recovered rather than original

Note from the seller

The seller's own words, published as written. The only copy on this page they control.

I bought this in 2010 with 121,000km from a family in Nelspruit who had it from new. Everything after that is my paperwork. It has done Botswana six times, Namibia twice and Mozambique more often than I can count, always with a trailer, and it has never once left me standing.

What I would want to know as the buyer: the rear air conditioning does not work and I never fixed it because we drive with the windows open; there is a shudder from the torque converter on a light throttle at about 70 that has been there for three years and has not got worse; and there is surface rust on the cross member and the arch lips that I treated rather than cut out in 2023. The belt is two months old and the ball joints are two years old, and both are invoiced.

I did not answer the AHC pressure test question. The specialist wanted R4,000 to test the globes and I decided that was the next owner's money, not mine. They are almost certainly the original units at 214,600km, the ride is still level and it still raises and lowers on the switch, but I am not going to tell you they are healthy when I have not measured them.

Man crosses four borders with a trailer for eleven years but will not spend R4,000 on the one system that costs R40,000 when it goes. That is not a paperwork gap, that is a decision, and it is priced into where this is sitting.

Fluid and filter were done at the 2014 service and again with the pre-sale service in May. The shudder was there before and after both, so I would not promise anyone that fluid fixes it.

kalahari_hilux

In. Torque converter shudder on an A343F at 214,000km is usually fluid and a solenoid rather than the converter, but it is worth a scan before anyone assumes gearbox money.

Rear arch lips and the cross member treated and not cut is the honest version of what half the bakkies in the Lowveld have had done to them. Worth someone getting under it at the viewing with a screwdriver rather than a magnet.

lowveld_uzjSeller

It sits where I park it, including three weeks in a hangar last winter, and it raises and lowers on the switch at normal speed. That is an observation, not a pressure reading, and I am not going to dress it up as one.

overberg_pajero

The AHC is the open question and R4,000 to test is nothing against what the globes cost. Has the height ever dropped overnight, or does it sit where you park it?

cruiser_van_zyl

Belt done twice with invoices, starter done with the manifold off, ball joints done both sides. That is the entire list of things that bankrupt people on a 100 and all three are in the file. This is what a used Cruiser listing should look like.
