This 2000 BMW M Roadster is finished in Imola Red over black and is offered from Bryanston by , its third owner and the keeper of the car for eleven years. It carries the 3.2 litre S50B32 straight six, the engine the rest of the world received rather than the American S52, drives through the five speed manual, and shows 128,600km.

The question on a Z3M is the rear subframe and the boot floor around its mounting points, which crack. Reinforcement plates were fitted by the previous owner in July 2016 at 92,600km, his invoice is published, and the plates, the boot floor and every mounting point were photographed on a lift for this listing.

Asked at intake whether that work was done correctly, the seller declined. His stated reason is that he is not a fabricator, has never welded anything, and will not offer an opinion a bidder might rely on. He published the photographs instead and invited anybody with the expertise to form their own view in the comments, which two people have done.

The rest of the file covers what an S50 needs. A clutch and rear main seal in 2018, the VANOS unit rebuilt with the updated seal kit in 2021, and the entire cooling system in 2023. The flaws stated are a light cold start rattle that has not been taken back to the specialist, an original soft top crazed at both lower rear corners, a worn driver's bolster, weak air conditioning at idle and a resprayed front bumper.

Model background

The Z3M took the S50B32 out of the European M3, put it in a short wheelbase roadster built in Spartanburg, and gave it a rear axle that had started life under a 3-Series compact. The result made 321 horsepower in this specification, had no traction control worth the name, and earned a reputation for being unforgiving that it has never entirely lost.

The subframe is the thing to know. The rear mounting points load a section of boot floor that was not designed for what the M cars do to it, and on hard driven examples the metal tears around the mounts. The fix is a set of reinforcement plates welded in, and by now a large proportion of surviving cars have had it done, well or badly. Whether it has been done, and how, is the first question and the last one.

South African cars carry the S50B32 rather than the S52 fitted to North American cars, which matters both for power and for how the market values them. This one has the correct engine for its market and the seller has published the engine number so it can be checked.

Seller interview

Before the car went live, the seller answered a standard set of questions plus a set our tools generated for this model from its documented failure modes. The full transcript is public, including anything they declined.

Kept score
8.2/10

9 of 10 answered, 1 declined. A high score means the seller told you more, not that the car is better.

7.6/10medium confidence

Inferred from the seller's answers and this model's known failure points. Nobody from Kept has inspected this car.

1 question the seller declined

  • Was that reinforcement work carried out correctly?

Reinforcement done badly can be worse than none, because it moves the load rather than spreading it. Only an informed inspection settles it.

Known flaws

The seller's own list of what this car needs money spent on.

  • 01Rear subframe reinforcement plates were fitted by a previous owner in 2016, and the seller declined to give an opinion on the quality of the welding
  • 02VANOS was rebuilt in 2021 and there is a light rattle on a cold start that has not returned to the specialist
  • 03Soft top is the original and the rear window is crazed at both lower corners
  • 04Driver's seat bolster is worn through to the backing at the outer edge
  • 05Air conditioning cools weakly at idle and improves with road speed
  • 06Front bumper has been resprayed, the shade is slightly off in direct sun

Note from the seller

The seller's own words, published as written. The only copy on this page they control.

I bought this in 2014 with 81,900km from the second owner, who had the subframe plates done two years later while it was still his and gave me the invoice when I bought it. Everything since 2014 is mine and invoiced.

I was asked whether the subframe work was done properly and I said I could not answer that. I am an accountant. I can tell you it was done in July 2016 by a shop in Edenvale, that the invoice is published, that the car has done 36,000km since including two track days, and that nothing has moved or cracked. What I cannot do is tell you the welds are good, because I would not know a good weld from a bad one and somebody might bid on my saying so.

The rest is on the flaws list. There is a light rattle from cold that started about a year after the VANOS rebuild and I have not taken it back. The roof is original and the rear window is crazed at the corners. The driver's bolster is through to the backing.

A man says I do not know how to judge a weld so here are the photographs, and two fabricators turn up and judge them for him. That is the comment thread doing the job the listing cannot. Reserve met.

Cold start rattle a year after a VANOS rebuild is worth chasing before it becomes a chain guide conversation. Not expensive to diagnose and he has been open that he has not bothered.

Declining to give an opinion he is not qualified to give, then publishing the evidence and inviting people who are qualified, is a genuinely useful way to handle it. It cost him a decline on the record and it got him two informed answers in the thread.

Fair. It goes back on the lift on Wednesday morning and I will add that angle to the gallery the same day. If anybody wants another specific view, ask now rather than after.

cape_e30

Agreed on the plates. What I would want photographed additionally is the inside of the boot floor above the right hand mount, because that is where they tear first and the angle in the gallery misses it.

jhb_e30

I fabricate for a living. Those plates are the correct pattern, the welds are consistent and there is no undercut visible in the photographs he has published. That is not an inspection and it is a great deal more than most listings give you to look at.
