2002 Mercedes-Benz SL500 Silver Arrow, final year R129
The last R129 off the line, sold by an executor who answers only what he can prove
Overview
Compiled by Kept from the seller's intake answers, the documents supplied and published records for the model. The seller does not write or edit this section, and nobody from Kept has inspected the car.
This 2002 Mercedes-Benz SL500 Silver Arrow is finished in Brilliant Silver over a two tone silver and charcoal interior, on the AMG Monoblock wheels, and is offered from Hermanus by , the executor of the late owner's estate. It shows 118,900km and is a final year R129, the last of the shape before the R230 replaced it in 2002.
The seller is an executor rather than an owner, and that shapes what this listing can tell a bidder. He has answered every question that can be verified from the car, the invoices in the deceased's file or the photographs, and he declined the question about how the car was used and stored between 2016 and 2023 on the grounds that the only person who could answer it has died. That decline is published with the rest of the transcript. It is the largest single gap in the lot and it is not one the seller can close.
What the documents do show: a Mercedes dealer service book stamped to 2004 at 41,200km, then loose invoices found in the file for an alternator, belt and crankcase breather in 2011, a major service and transmission service in 2016, brakes and front tyres in 2019, and a roadworthy and general service in 2023. The executor serviced the car himself before listing it, replaced the battery and flushed the brake fluid, and photographed the file exactly as he found it rather than reordering it. A Mercedes-Benz data card has been requested and had not been returned when the lot went live, which is the document that would confirm the Silver Arrow specification from the factory.
The flaws stated are pixel loss across the lower third of the instrument cluster, an air conditioning system that cools weakly at idle, damp staining in the boot carpet under the roof pump that has dried out and has not been traced, front tyres dating from 2019, and a hardtop included without its lifting stand and without confirmation that it is the car's original one. The roof raises and lowers on the switch and its hydraulics have never been pressure tested. Bidders should read the transcript before the description on this lot.
Model background
The R129 ran from 1989 to 2002 and was engineered in the period when Mercedes still built to a standard and sent the bill afterwards. It introduced a pop up roll bar that deployed in under three tenths of a second, an electrohydraulic soft top with fifteen hydraulic cylinders, and a body that has aged into one of the least dated shapes of its decade. The 500SL badge became SL500 in 1994 when Mercedes reversed its nomenclature, which is why an early car and a late one wear the same words in a different order.
The late cars are the ones to have mechanically. The M113 V8 replaced the earlier M119 in 1999, the biodegradable wiring harness problem that haunts 1992 to 1995 cars was long gone, and the 722.6 five speed automatic is a known quantity. What arrived instead is a set of age failures that are electrical and hydraulic rather than mechanical: cluster pixels, roof cylinders, air conditioning.
The Silver Arrow was the send off. Mercedes built it for the final year in Brilliant Silver with a two tone interior, the sport package and the AMG Monoblock wheels, as a run out edition marking the end of the R129 line. Verifying one is a data card exercise, because the parts that make it are parts that can be fitted to any late SL500, and the badge on the wing is not evidence.

Seller interview
Before the car went live, the seller answered a standard set of questions plus a set our tools generated for this model from its documented failure modes. The full transcript is public, including anything they declined.
10 of 11 answered, 1 declined. A high score means the seller told you more, not that the car is better.
Inferred from the seller's answers and this model's known failure points. Nobody from Kept has inspected this car.
1 question the seller declined
How was the car used and stored between 2016 and 2023, and did it stand unused for extended periods?
Standing is the main cause of hydraulic, seal and air conditioning failure on these. Only 800km were covered between the 2016 and 2023 invoices.
Known flaws
The seller's own list of what this car needs money spent on.
- 01Instrument cluster has pixel loss across the lower third of the display, legible but degrading
- 02Soft top raises and lowers but the hydraulics have never been pressure tested in the executor's hands and the roof cylinders are believed original
- 03Damp staining in the boot carpet below the roof pump, dried out, source not diagnosed
- 04Hardtop is included but the lifting stand is not, and the executor cannot confirm the hardtop is the car's original one
- 05Air conditioning cools weakly at idle and improves with road speed, not diagnosed
- 06Both front tyres date from 2019 and should be replaced on age rather than tread

Note from the seller
The seller's own words, published as written. The only copy on this page they control.
I am the executor of my late brother in law's estate and I am selling this car on behalf of his wife and two daughters. I am not a car person. I have been careful because I would rather sell it for less to somebody who knew what they were buying than have it come back on the family.
Everything I have found is in the file and photographed as I found it, including the invoices that were loose in the wallet. The car started, ran and drove when I collected it from the garage in March. I had it serviced, put a battery in it and had it flushed and a roadworthy done. The roof goes up and down on the switch and I have run it six or seven times.
There are things I cannot tell you. I do not know how often he drove it in his last years, whether it stood for months at a time, or whether the hardtop in the garage is the one that came with the car. I was asked all of that at intake and I declined the storage question rather than guess, because guessing on his behalf is exactly what I should not be doing. Come and look at it, bring somebody who knows R129s, and I will give them as long as they want with it.
Comments & offers
7 comments · 3 offersSeven years of use nobody can account for, a roof nobody has tested, water in the boot nobody has traced and a Silver Arrow nobody has verified. He has been honest about every one of them, which is why it is at 395 and not 260. Honest is not the same as cheap to fix.
Cluster pixels are a known board level repair and there is a man in Pinetown who does them properly for about R4,500. It is on the list of things that read as frightening and are not.
Agreed, and I have said so in the description rather than let the badge do the arguing. It was requested through a dealer in Cape Town in May and I will post it in the comments the day it arrives, whatever it says.
The data card is the whole Silver Arrow question. Wheels, badge and a two tone interior can all be fitted. Until it comes back this is a late SL500 with a Silver Arrow specification and that is not the same money.
That is fair and I will not pretend otherwise. It is dry now, I have not traced it, and I did not want to have a shop open the boot trim and then describe work I do not understand. If a bidder wants it on a lift with a roof specialist before the auction ends I will arrange it in Hermanus or Somerset West at their cost.
Damp under the roof pump is the thing to price here. On an R129 that is usually a cylinder or the pump seals weeping into the boot, and by the time you see staining it has been going for a while. Six cycles of the roof is not a test, it is a demonstration.
An executor selling a car he did not own, saying plainly which questions he cannot answer, with the file photographed as found. I have bought two deceased estate cars and neither seller did any of that.
